General Information
Bald eagles live along the coast and on major lakes and rivers where they feed mainly on fish. The Bald Eagle is our National bird. It is very unique because it only lives in North America and only North America. There are 70,000 bald eagles that live in Alaska alone. A bald eagles eye is the size of a humans although it can see at least four times greater than a human, even with perfect vision. The skeleton of bald eagles weighs anywhere from 250-300 grams or about 1/2 lb. The beak, talons, and feathers are made of keratin. The average life span is 15-20 years. A captive eagle at West Stephentown, NY lived to be at least 48 years old. At one point bald eagles where almost extinct, but in 2007 they soared off the list. Each bald eagle has about 7000 feathers.
